“Tell me about yourself.”
That probably isn’t the question you expected. Most people think our first conversation will begin with the accident, the injuries, or the insurance company. Those things are important, but before I can explain how your injuries have changed your life, I need to understand the life you were living before the accident. I want to know what brought you happiness, what your goals were, who depended on you, and what has been taken from you. Medical records tell me where you were injured. They don’t tell me who you are.
Near the end of our first meeting, I often ask one more question: “What is the most important thing about you that you want me to know that I haven’t asked?” The answer is often the most meaningful part of the conversation.
Insurance companies see files. Doctors see injuries. Courts see evidence. My job is to understand the person behind the case and to make sure their story is told with compassion, dignity, and respect.
